MAYDAY Mr. Harper

Now armed with his majority, one of the first things Prime Minister Harper’s Conservative government announced was plans to close Newfoundland and Labrador's search-and-rescue centre, located in St. John's.  This decision puts a $1 million price tag on the safety of the thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who work at sea. The government also announced plans to close the Quebec City rescue centre.

The closure is scheduled for June 2012 and as proud Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, WE MUST SPEAK UP NOW!

About centre

img

(MRSC St. John's) is one of two Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre's operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. It has been in operation out of Canadian Coast Guard Base in St. John's since 1977. Tens of thousands of Canadians, including thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, earn their living at sea. It is dangerous work. They deserve to be as safe as possible. The maritime sub-centres in both St. John’s (and Quebec) are critical to our safety.

The maritime area for which the St. John's Sub-Centre is responsible consists of more than 900,000 square kilometers of ocean and 28,956 kilometers of coastline. Marine activity in this area includes pleasure crafts, fishing, transatlantic shipping, and oil and gas exploration and development.
